CALL FOR PAPERS 3rd International Conference on Engineering Design and Automation Conference Theme: Engineering Design and Automation for the Next Millennium Hyatt Regency Hotel August 1-4, 1999 Vancouver, BC, CANADA The introduction of microprocessors and computer-controlled production tools into industry has given a new perspective to manufacturing processes worldwide. Computer aided design (CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM), flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), group technology (GT), and computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) have been considered by many as viable tools for reducing direct and indirect manufacturing costs and improving product quality and production flexibility. However, most of these developed tools and techniques highly concentrate on specific manufacturing tasks such as graphical design, process planning, part family formation, and computer simulation, and they do not often provide a totally integrated environment for the designer to create a high-quality, cost-effective, optimal product. Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches based on genetic algorithms (GA), simulated annealing (SA), artificial neural networks (ANN), etc. now represent the major trend in intelligent design and manufacturing. The objective of this conference is to provide an international forum to promote, exchange, and disseminate information and research results on Engineering Design and Automation. Topics Covered: - AI (GA, SA, ANN, etc.) applications in manufacturing systems - Life cycle cost analysis of products and processes - Design and implementation of cellular manufacturing systems - Simultaneous engineering - Methodologies for concurrent product and process design - Design of automated production systems - Design for manufacturability, assembly, and reliability - Feature-based design and manufacturing - Workforce issues in advanced technology systems - Quality function deployment - Organizational issues and training in advanced technology systems - Product and process modeling - Quality and reliability issues in advanced manufacturing systems - Manufacturing applications of fuzzy logic - Management issues in advanced manufacturing systems - Automated part programming - Automatic shop floor control - Adaptive control and unattended operation of machines - Optimization in engineering systems design - Case studies and applications in manufacturing automation - Ergonomics in automated manufacturing systems - Computer networking in manufacturing and service sectors - Intelligent material handling systems - Economic justification of advanced automated systems - Design evaluation for serviceability, maintainability, - Multidisciplinary research and education programs in design and disassembly, recyclability, and disposability manufacturing - Agile manufacturing - Environmentally conscious design and manufacturing - Other related topics in manufacturing systems Four copies of an abstract (in English) of about 300 words (including names, addresses, phone, fax number, and e-mail address of all authors) should be submitted to individuals listed below.
