However: ARNIR (Lat. Rainierius, Raynerius), saint, bishop,
martyr. Born cca 1100 in Romagna, from AD 1175 bishop of Split. Stoned
to deat by the people of the commune of Poljica in the hinterland of
Split, apparently over some land dispute. (They were not Magyars and the
dispute was based on some papers which were fake, the whole situation
being volatile - at that time emperor Emmanuel Komnenos was ruling that
part of Dalmatia, other parts of Croatia were in a "personal union" with
Hungary). Arnir/Rainerius was burried in a Benedictine church outside Split
and soon the church was named after him. His officium was approved by pope
Alexander VIII in 1690. Since then he has been venerated as co-patron of
Split. His vita mentions miracles at the site of his murder, e.g. a spring
of healing water etc. His feast is on 4th and 11th August.
Some sources (notably Thomas Archidiaconus) say he came from
gagli in Tusacny.
