Hello Chris
For the past two years the EARL Consortium has been keen to highlight best practice and quality in the development of UK Public Library Websites. It has done so through its Best on the Web Awards, of which the 1998 results were announced at the EARL AGM, November 1998. Full details of the winners of the 1997 and 1998 Awards can be found at http://www.earl.org.uk/earlweb/awards98r.html
The Consotium's Networked Services Policy Task Group is also publishing a series of papers on a wide range of issues that would be of interest to all public library Web developers. The first in the series, on filtering, is now available from http://www.earl.org.uk/taskgroups/policy/issue_papers/filtering.htm
You may also be interested in attending EARL's Networked Information Management Briefing on the 3rd March 1998. This day of briefings and discussions aims to highlight the issues involved in the management of library Websites. Further details will be posted on the EARL Website in the near future and will be available from http://www.earl.org.uk/events/index.html
If you would like to attend this event or you would like further details then please contact me at the EARL Office on 0171 702 2020 or email [log in to unmask]
Good luck with your research.
Best wishes
Helen

I am currently doing some research into the quality of design and content of public library web sites and have been unable to find much in the way of guidance / examples of best practice for libraries wishing to develop their own presence on the web. Does anybody out there have any useful pointers?
Chris Webster
