Hi,
Trying not to cover ground that has already being covered by Brian Kelly in
his latest survey,
> We're looking for something to index/manage the whole site, which is held
on
> several servers around the university. >
Do you want to pay money or are you looking for something "free"?
Does it have to run on NT or can it run on Unix (ohhh go on, OS/2 or Mac?)
If free and NT as a rule of thumb you'll only get a miniature version of some
product.
If unix go for HTDig
If os/2 (stop laughing now!) there is only one engine that does what you
want.
Any mac users out there. I believe there was an engine for Macs that could
index remote sites etc (was it packaged with Web Star). I had used it on
some Swiss site and it was really good.
> Has anyone come across excalibur or verity?
Never used them but I looked at them a long time ago (hoping that one
day, that is before NT 4.0 ever appeared ...). They have been around for a
while, they will not come cheap but they have the pedigree.
If you are paying you might also want to look at Muscat.
http://www.muscat.co.uk/ last time I checked you had to buy the product to
get what you want.
Just to make the choice a bit harder.
Regards
Charles
BTW. Do I see a business oportunity here to become a Search Service Provider
;-) How much would you pay per month to rent an engine?
