It's not that, but rather that they have got rich by selling
non-indefinite licences to use their buggy software, even when
the fixes are publicly available, that you are forbidden to fix
even if you could.
The whole "should universities support a company as unethical
as Microsoft" argument is peripheral. As is the "Free
solutions either are or inevitably will be better" one.
