Hi Charles,
(Early signs of schizophrenia, I am answering myself). The MS web site
under system requirements for SiteServer says NT SERVER + service packs
etc.
I take that to mean that the TCP/IP limit of 10 connections on NT desktop
remains. Nothing wrong with someone running NT server (as long as the
œ cost is taken into account). Presumably setting it up should not be
very different from setting up/running NT Desktop (even I have managed
that).
If someone though expects to get much service from NT desktop [I stand to
be corrected :-) ] then 10 connections may be too little.
What I do not know is if the 10 connections count if they are from
unique clients or if they count with every thread a browser opens.
Netscape, for example, by default seems to normally be set to open 5-6
connections if downloading graphics etc is ON (I never managed many more).
Thus if threads count as connections, two clients approx. 10
connections ;-) Thus, you may be safer using Site Server with NT server.
Brian,
What I do not get is how can you plug a product from a company that for
as long as it has realised the existence of the web it has tried to
make it proprietary (MSN, Netscape, Office2000 coming).
Will the W3C soon recommend that we must all use Internet Explorer as
the only browser so we get all the "weird and beutifull" proprietary
html stuff that Office2000 will generate. Unless off course Microsoft is
now an Open Systems company as with Java etc.
An example of open standards from Essex (appropriate as it is the site
on which the Ariadne article is based) is that the engine indexes
*.doc and *.ppt (probably *.xls too). Am I supposed to be able to see
these files and, must I have Office2, Office97 ... Office2005?
(I know, my problem and Essex's if I cannot view them).
I rest my case.
Regards
Charles
BTW. Like on how the 10 connection limit applies I may be wrong on what
Office2000 will actually do when released (and probably I will be).
