Seventh Annual Seminar for Members of
Senior Management Teams
17th-19th May, 1999
Background
The first programme in this series was organised by UCoSDA in 1993 and
focused on Pro-Vice-Chancellors/Vice Principals, but in the following
year the invitation to attend was extended to all members of senior
management teams, i.e. senior academic and senior administrative
leaders/managers. We have continued with this broader invitation, in
order (a) to address the development needs of all new senior
managers/officers, and (b) to emphasise the importance of senior
management team approaches. The programme reflects the needs,
expressed in the Dearing Report, for managers to develop skills to
meet strategic objectives, manage change and improve institutional
effectiveness.
The main intentions of this year’s programme will be:
- to disseminate current information concerning the planning for and
management of universities and colleges;
- to encourage and support strategic thinking and planning for the institution;
- to support policy formation in relationship to HE core activities - the future context
for teaching and research;
- to develop thinking about productive relationships between senior academic and administrative
staff;
- to create an opportunity for the exchange of ideas, across a range of HEI’s on senior
management functions.
Contributors:
These will include senior leaders in higher education and in
universities, as well as specialists in management and leadership
development. The following speakers have been invited to participate
in the programme.
- Professor John Field, Professor of Lifelong-Learning, University
of Warwick.
- Michel Paulson-Ellis, Registrar and Secretary, University of East Anglia.
- Professor Patricia Leighton, Head of School of Law, Manchester
Metropolitan University.
- Dr Peter Milton, Director of Programme Review, Quality Assurance
Agency.
Seminar Leader:
Professor Ian McNay, Head of the School of Post Compulsory Education
and Training, University of Greenwich.
Content:
The focus throughout will be on the inter-relationship between policy
formation, strategy development and operational leadership and
management in connection with HE core activities. Sessions will focus
on:
- future trends in higher education, implications for strategic
planning and management;
- the role of senior staff in shaping and implementing strategies;
- changing roles and relationships across senior staff in respect of
their management functions;
- standards and quality - responding to the new context;
- the legal framework for staff, managers and students - rights and
responsibilities.
The programme will comprise presentations, discussions and group
workshops, and will be predominately participative in style:
participants will be expected to do some work, for submission, prior
to the programme.
Target participants:
It is intended that member institutions nominate colleagues in the
early stages of their appointments to senior office. Such colleagues
might be, for example, Pro-Vice-Chancellors/Vice Principals, Deans,
Registrars, Secretaries, Heads of Administration in key areas -
academic planning, finance, human resources etc.

Danbury Park Conference Centre, Chelmsford, Essex
