Making Management Work:
A Course for Practising Managers
28th-30th June and 13th-14th September, 1999
Background:
UCoSDA has worked with both of the professional groups, UCISA and
SCONUL, to produce and present a number of management courses for
staff in computing, library and information services departments.
There is a strategic management programme for the most senior staff,
computer directors and chief librarians and two courses a year for
those from computing, library and information services departments who
are new to a management or supervisory role. The programme outlined
here is for those who are not new to management nor operating at the
most senior levels. This new programme is therefore aimed at what
might loosely be described as middle managers, those who have
management experience but who would like to develop their existing
management skills. The course title, ‘Making Management Work - A
Course for Practising Managers’, reflects the place of this programme
within the overall portfolio.
Aims:
This course will give participants an opportunity to reflect on their
role as managers and to consider a range of management skills and
techniques that they use within their day-to-day management
activities.
Objectives:
By the end of the programme it is intended that participants will
have:
looked at the way they see their roles as manager in a
university/college context, their management styles, the organisations
and cultures they work in and the ways people work together in teams
and are motivated to perform; considered their roles as human resource
managers and discussed a number of people management issues;
considered a range of specific management skills affecting their work
including those concerned with managing change, project management and
working with budgets; practised the skills of negotiation; looked more
broadly within the organisation to issues concerned with strategic
management, the level of service that they provide and stakeholder
analysis; had an opportunity to work and network with a number of
managers undertaking similar roles within higher education.
Participants:
This programme is intended for experienced managers from computing,
library and information services departments. It is expected that
participants will have held a management role for a few years and have
responsibility for other staff and/or head up a function, section or
department. It is not intended for those new to management/supervision,
or those who already operate at a strategic level within organisations.
