The university has advertised for an Educational and Professional
Developer to assist me in my work here. I have enclosed below the job
advertisement and full description of the post. If you, or anyone you
know, are interested in the post, then you need to apply by next Friday

development programmes in learning and teaching and will support groups
of staff who are developing strategies for developing learning and

Background
The University of Wolverhampton has established a vision to become a
first class regional University and the University of first choice in
the West Midlands. It is committed to continuous improvement in learning
and teaching, underpinned by research into how students learn. It wishes
to exploit its expertise and reputation in Technology Supported Learning
by
seeking out and utilizing the advantages of ICT in learning and
teaching.
It wishes to pursue the national Higher Education agenda whilst
maintaining effective pastoral and learning support for its students.
The university has recently invested in the establishment of a Centre
for Learning and Teaching to provide leadership and support in its
endeavours, and it now wishes to strengthen this support by the
appointment of an Educational and Professional Development Co-ordinator.
The Centre for Learning and Teaching
The Centre for Learning and Teaching has been recently established under
the leadership of its Director, Mr Ivan Moore. It was preceded by a
Teaching and Learning Unit which undertook development work in Schools
and worked with staff on a range of projects including the development
of electronic learning, the implementation of learning outcomes and key
skills, and the co-ordination of TLTP projects. The University's
Strategy for Learning and Teaching identified the need for a an enlarged
Centre to better support the range of initiatives required to move the
University through to a new model of managed learning and to meet the
University's quality agenda. The Centre will when fully operational
focus on educational and professional development, research into
learning and teaching, and ICT based delivery. It has close
relationships with the Learning Centres, IT Services, and the Registry's
Quality and Standards Unit, leads the University's expert working group
on learning and teaching, and reports to the Pro Vice Chancellor
Academic Planning and Operations.
Overview of the post
The post is designed to take forward the enhancement of the quality of
learning and teaching through educational and professional development.
You will be a key member of a close professional team located in the
newly formed Centre for Learning and Teaching and will have the
opportunity to shape the Centre and contribute to University policy. You
will work with external agencies in higher education and with all
university staff involved in learning and teaching. Your work will be in
support of groups of staff who are developing strategies for learning
and teaching, with schools involved in educational developments, and
with staff involved in formulating professional development programmes
in learning and teaching.
You will deliver educational and professional programmes through a range
of methods including workshops, focus groups, consultancies, validated
award programmes, the development of on-line materials and
representation on committees. You will also be expected to locate this
development work within an understanding of current educational and
academic innovations and debates and the requirements of the Quality
Assurance Agency.
Personal specifications
You should possess leadership skills in learning and teaching, including
the ability to deliver effective educational development programmes,
workshops and consultancies. You will also need to maintain your
detailed awareness of national and international developments in
learning and teaching and be able both to communicate and to influence
these developments. You should have experience in the design, delivery
and accreditation of an institutional mandatory Postgraduate certificate
in Learning and Teaching.
Budget
Budget responsibilities to be determined. You will be required to manage
fixed term project budgets from time to time.
Purpose of the post
To progress the work of the Centre for Learning and Teaching, so that it
develops the University's learning and teaching through research,
innovation and the professional development of its staff.
Main duties and responsibilities
1. You will assist the Director in developing and promoting the
University's strategy for learning and teaching. This will include
supporting schools in developing their own local strategies and
supporting other groups of staff in developing specific sub-strategies.
2. You will support the director in providing leadership and support for
the following groups of staff:
- academic, professional and technical staff within the Centre
for Learning and Teaching,
- Deans, Associate Deans and academic staff in Schools,
- Directors and professional staff in central departments
involved in supporting learning and teaching.
3. You will represent the university in national fora on teaching and
learning in order to:
- influence the development of these fora,
- raise the profile of the university on a national level.
4. You will communicate national developments to the Centre for Learning
and Teaching and, through it, to the University Executive, committees,
schools, departments and staff.
5. You will take the lead responsibility for managing and developing the
University's MA in Learning and Teaching, for ensuring its continuing
accreditation with relevant professional bodies, and for managing the
quality and relevance of the Post graduate certificate stage of the
programme.
6. You will provide consultancy and advice to schools in order to
support them in taking responsibility for developing their academic
portfolios and their learning and teaching methods.
7. You will provide consultancy and advice to departments in order to
assist them in providing learning support for students and schools.
8. You will ensure that any developments are evaluated and that they
contribute to programmes of study which meet the university's quality
criteria.
9. The Director, the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic Operations and
Planning) or the Vice Chancellor may require you to undertake other
tasks within the level of the post.
