Dear Christine,

The problems you have encountered are most likely related to the fact that
SuSE 6.0 is based on libc 6 (glibc). Several tests (done by O. Josphs at the
FIL), even with Matlab 5.2 have shown instabilities, even with non-SPM
mex-files.
The simplest solution might be to install SuSE 5.3 (but using the latest
2.0.36 kernel). This configuration works very stable for SPM 96/97 under
Matlab 4.2 AND for the future release of SPM running under Matlab 5.2. BTW
J. Ashburner has rewriiten the basic filehandling routines to cope with both
little _AND_ big endian format.
We will further try to get SPM running under Linux using the glibc.
TheMathworks have several technical notes to set proper library
environments. These tips are all listed under RedHat Linux 5.x. These
suggestions should equally apply to SuSE 6.0 (both using glibc).
