FYI, you may find the .mat file format information you are seeking in the
Matlab distribution directory /xtern/examples/eng_mat. A description of
this format and its application is given in the Matlab 5.2 Application
Program Interface Guide, page 511. Based on personal experience, I have
been able to read/write .mat files containing SPM image data with my own
ANSI C-code without trouble.
