I've now received a copy of the minutes of the RSS 2000 Planning Committee
Meeting of 17th December and can confirm that the opportunity for Radstats
to participate as a group is there.
The minutes of the meeting state "Individual Fellows and organisations
outside the Society should be encouraged to apply to organise sessions both
by news item placed in RSS news and by encouragement from members of the
Conference Committee and Section Committees". So this is part of my
encouragement!
One offer has already been made on this list -a paper in the area of
historical patterns of inequality stemming from the Dorling/Ell/Southall
project which ends in Sept 2000. See message from Humphrey Southall of 21
Dec 98.
I've also received a very positive response from Richard Douthwaite who is
working on a new edition of his 1992 book 'The Growth Illusion - how
economic growth has enriched the few, impoverished the many, and endangered
the planet'. It is of course difficult or impossible to separate being
critical of the idea of economic growth from appraisal of the way growth is
measured in economic statistics, and I can anyone with an interest in
economic or social statistics will not be disappointed to read Dothwaite's
book from a statistical standpoint.
Anyway I would welcome further offers/suggestions. The next meeting of the
RSS Organising Committee is on 2nd March 1999. After that arrangements will
probably be handed over to the local organising Committee at Reading
University under the Chairmanship of David Collett.
It would be good to get a few offers or ideas included in the minutes of the
March meeting. So please get in touch with me if before then you are
thinking of any possibilities.
This message more or less summarises the current situation, I'll be around
at the Radstats Conf on 27th Feb to receive further
suggestions/ideas/offers.
