Further to the recent Art & science theme:-
I am intrigued by the term "cultural theorist"!
Perhaps Matt can tell us what qualifications one needs to
become a cultural theorist. Is this social science or
socialism or what?
As for "materiality of DNA" - well, I thought DNA *was* material,
and is! Perhaps this underlies the difference between
artists and scientists. Someone once said the difference
was that artists try and understand what is *not* there,
while scientists try to understand what *is* there.
Perhaps Matt could enlighten us by telling us
exactly what he has in mind for the painting/sculpture/creation...
which is destined to have such a high public profile
on the international stage.
This sounds like a blank cheque.
Call me a sceptic if you like- but I fail to see how the notion
of "Art & Science" is anything more than simply "Art" alone.
An artistic creation incorporating a portrayal of DNA
has no more scientific component than a picture of a tree
or of a patient deeply anaesthetised during an operation.
To suggest these have anything whatsoever to do with "science"
is a failure to understand science.
But - I am happy to be persuaded my Matt.
cheers,
Dick
