This position is only applicable for people with European Union
nationality, including the UK.
Applications are invited for a 3-year Research Studentship, available from
any convenient time between now and June 2000, to join a collaboration
between the groups of Drs R P Tuckett (Chemistry, Birmingham) and P A
Hatherly (Physics, Reading). This new project, recently funded by EPSRC,
is titled : 'Vacuum-UV photodissociation and photoionisation spectroscopy
of gas-phase polyatomic molecules'. The student will be based and
registered for a PhD at Birmingham University, but many of the experiments
use synchrotron radiation and will be performed at either the Daresbury or
the BESSY II, Berlin source. The experimental techniques used include
vacuum-UV absorption, fluorescence-excitation and coincidence
spectroscopies, and will be applied to polyatomic molecules of relevance to
chemical etching and atmospheric chemistry. Details can be found in two
recent papers, J. Chem. Phys. (1998) 108 857-868 and Zeit. Phys. Chem.
(1996) 195 97-136, and in the web site given below.
The student may also help to develop multi-channel CCD fluorescence
detectors to cover the range 200-800 nm for use at the Daresbury
Synchrotron Radiation Source. These detectors will be used to record
dispersed emission spectra over this wavelength range, following
photoexcitation of species either in the gas phase, in clusters, or in the
solid state by vacuum-UV or soft-Xray radiation from the Daresbury SRS.
The successful candidate will participate in experiments using these
detectors of Dr R P Tuckett (Birmingham), Dr J C Whitehead (Manchester) and
Prof B Hamilton (UMIST).
Interested candidates either holding or hoping to gain a 1st or upper 2nd
Honours degree this summer (or those with an M.Sc. degree or the
mainland-EU equivalent) are asked to contact Dr R P Tuckett, School of
Chemistry, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT [tel

possible.
