First Announcement:
------------------
An EuroSummer School on Dynamics of Molecular Collisions Relevant to
the Evolution of Interstellar Matter will be organized at the Weizmann
Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel from September 11-15, 2000. The
school is mainly dedicated to young researchers (graduate students and
post-docs) who wants to enhance their knowledge in this field.
The school is organized the week before the next MOLEC XIII
conference, which will be held in Jerusalem September 17-22
(for more information on MOLEC XIII, see
http://www.fh.huji.ac.il/~roib/MOLEC/index.htm ). We strongly
encourage candidates to enlist to both events.
Topics
------
The topics of the summer school will include a selection of modern
theoretical and experimental activities in the field of collision
dynamics
relevant for understanding the physics and chemistry of interstellar
matter. In order to learn more about this interdisciplinary field,
several
lectures will discuss the power and limitations of modern astronomical
observations and the need to know for modeling complex systems, e.g.,
dense interstellar clouds or circumstellar discs. It is our goal to
present
a unified view of the subjects, so that the discussion between the
various disciplines will be constructive and will be remember as a
unique
learning experience by the students.
The lecture program will include the most relevant and important parts
of
today's theories, experiments and applications related to the dynamics
of
molecular collisions with a strong emphasis on astrophysically related
processes. As pointed out above, we are aiming at integrating
the subjects of molecular collisions and the evolution of
interstellar matter and to present a rather broad view of
the subject, something we feel is missing for many of the students.
In order to do this, we plan to divide the conference into four main
themes:
(1) Fundamental theories, (2) Experimental techniques, (3) Typical
experiments, and (4) Astronomy, interstellar models and
observations. A poster session where the participants will post and
discuss their work will be organized during one of the evening.

Participants
------------
The EuroSummer school is mainly geared toward young researchers
(graduate students, post-docs, etc.. ) who are active inside a
European Member State, or an Associated State (see list at
http://www.cordis.lu/fp5/src/3rdcountries.htm ).
Participants from third countries are also welcome to register, but
the status of the financial support is not yet clear
at this point (see below).
A maximum of 60 participants will be accepted. Female researchers are
encourage to apply.
Prospective participants should download the form from the website (see
above),
together with a letter of support from their direct supervisors
and send it via FAX to: Dr. Oded Heber, FAX: +972-8-9344166.
The letter should state the status of the candidate (PhD students,
post-docs, etc..), the subject(s) of research, and the date the degree
(for graduate students) is expected to be received.
Participants will be asked to present their work in a form of
poster. A special poster session will be organized for this purpose
during one of the evening.
The deadline for
registration is March 1st, 2000.
However, note that young researchers do not have an automatic right to
participate in, nor to be supported by the Summer School. The
selection of candidates is the responsibility of the
organizers.
Financial Support
-----------------
The Summer School will financially support candidates who have been
accepted as participants. The financial support includes full board on
the campus of the Weizmann Institute of Science (three meals a day,
coffee breaks and shared rooms), as well as 50% of the
travel expenses (flight ticket), up to a maximum of 500 Euro. We hope
to be able to support a larger fraction of the travel expenses, but
the exact amount of support cannot be determined until the list of
participants is finalized. There is no registration fee.
Location
--------
The EuroSummer school will take place on the campus of the Weizmann
Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. The Weizmann Institute is
located about 20 km south of the city of Tel-Aviv, and about 25 km
from the Ben-Gurion International Airport. The participants will be
housed on
site in the so called youth village, which is minutes from the
auditorium and Physics library.
Restaurants, swimming pools, tennis court, and other sport
facilities will be available to the participants.
More details are available through the website of the school:
