Research Studentships: Laser Driven Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy
Studentships are available for qualified students with a background in
chemistry, physics or related subjects. The projects are supported by:
Dr. J.G. Frey & Professor B.E. Hayden (Department of Chemistry)
Dr. W.S. Brocklesby (Department of Physics and Optoelectronics Research Centre)
University of Southampton, Southampton
SO17 1BJ, UK
Laser Driven Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy
A number of studentships are available associated with a new project to
develop Laser Driven Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy to record IR vibrational
spectra of surface species with molecular spatial resolution under a
£460,000 grant from the EPSRC (Chemistry & Physics programmes). The
combination of a tuneable ps IR laser/OPO with a UHV STM will revolutionise
surface studies by combining direct imaging and spectroscopic
identification. Extensive refurbishment of the physical chemistry area is
taking place and this together with a specific grant from the Wolfson
Foundation will provide a purpose built area for the equipment.
The conditions will be those of a standard EPSRC studentship (maintenence
grant of £6455 pa). Some positions are available for EU as well as UK students.
A range of Projects are avaialble:
The development of Laser Driven STM
Spectroscopy using Optical Parametric Oscillators
Second Harmonic Generation Studies of interfaces
Scanning Near Field Optical Microscopy
