Some recent 'postings' with attachments lead me to think that we could make
life a little easier for one another - I therefore offer the following
observation.
All PC software expects filenames to end with an 'extension': three
characters after a full stop. These tell the software which programme to
use to read the file. Common examples are:
XXXXXXXX.doc MS Word document
XXXXXXXX.wpd WordPerfect document
XXXXXXXX.txt Plain text
XXXXXXXX.htm Web page
If one receives an email with an attached file that does not have an
extension to its filename, one has to do a certain amount of experimenting
to be able to read it. This takes time, and many midwives will be too busy
to bother. If in doubt, use the File - Save As option that most word
processors possess and send as plain text - .txt. This will enable the
greatest majority of recipients to read the attachment with ease, but bear
in mind that any comlex formatting, such as tables, may become disorganised.
I do hope this is a useful suggestion, and best wishes for a happy
Christmas (if relevant) and New Year (if it's yours) to everyone!
