Introduction of Lewis Mehl-Madrona and Morgaine Madrona
Lewis: I am interested in how the experience of giving birth and of being
born affects family life and child development. I became interested in home
birth because of its uniqueness in the 1970's for being an environment in
which birth could happen without excess intervention. I wondered how these
babies and families would differ in the effects of birth compared to the
typical hospital birth. Since I began my studies in 1973, I have published a
number of papers on the safety of home birth and on the effect of the birth
experience on families. My interests have expanded to autism, and we have a
web site now on the complementary and alternative therapies for autism. The
URL is http://www.healing-arts.org/children. I am especially interested in
the hypothesis of epidural+oxytocin+MMR vaccine leading to autism. Read
about my other studies on http://www.healing-arts.org/mehl-madrona.
Morgaine: I am interested in traditional midwifery and how it maintains low
risk. I have been interested in the Netherlands style midwifery since a
teenager, and have struggled to understand how we can implement such
midwifery in the United States. Along with Lewis, I am interested in the
effect of birth on families. Lewis and I have been looking at the medical
risks of epidural anesthesia as well as the psychiatric risks and will have a
web site up soon documenting these issues and linking to the work on autism
that Lewis is doing. We are working on software to calculate the hidden
costs of epidurals and high-tech childbirth. I am interested in showing how
traditional midwifery interventions can reduce risk compared to technological
midwifery.
