Don't we? Working in a law library with a specialist
European collection I beg to differ - if we didn't explain
to our students which reference tools to use for different
purposes, whether library catalogues, internet services,
printed material or electronic data, at the beginning of
each course we would spend even more time helping readers
on an individual basis and leaving those who are too
reticent to ask without a clue at the end of their course.
I would certainly agree that teaching information skills
relevant to a subject should be incorporated into
the curriculum but since librarians in academic
environments are generally divorced in career and
administrative terms from teaching staff it is hard to see
where the impetus is going to come from.
another hobby horse...!
Best wishes
