Dear colleagues
Please find attached a registration form for the conference
on "Advertising and Identity", to be held at the Barber
Institute, University of Birmingham, Saturday 8 May 1999.
Advertising is by its very nature a cross-disciplinary
topic, and therefore of relevance to people engaged
in language teaching and learning, Applied Linguistics,
Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, Social
History, Marketing, Cultural Studies, Media Studies,
Translation Studies, Women's Studies, and so forth.
The study of advertising texts heightens sensitivity to
language and its (mis)uses. Close readings of texts and
images can provide useful insights into a multitude of
issues, including changes in social trends and attitudes;
regional and national identity; intertextuality, cultural
iconicity, the relationship between advertising and art;
stereotypes, racism and gender.
This Conference aims to provide a forum for discussion of
the themes associated with the study of advertising and the
construction of identities. In order to ensure maximum
participation and greater analytical depth, the conference
will be organised as a series of workshops or round
tables.
If you are interested, please visit our web site on

or register by printing and sending a copy of the attached
registration form.
