A Conference to mark the 4th Centenary of
Diego Velázquez.
1599-1660.
Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th of September 1999.
To be held in the Rupert Beckett Lecture theatre at the University of
Leeds.
Convened by the Department of Fine Art, the Department of Spanish and
Portuguese & El Instituto Cervantes.
The conference will examine the paintings of Velázquez in relationship
to the political, religious and cultural contexts of 17thC Spain.
Subjects that will be addressed include: The patronage of the Habsburg
court; CounterReformation theology; Devotional sculpture; Golden Age
theatre. A further theme that will be explored is the artistic legacy
of Velázquez in Spain, Latin America and 19thC France.

There will be plenary lectures presented by Professor Adrian Rifkin
and Professor Terence O'Reilly.
El Instituto Cervantes presents a concert of "Music of the time of
Velázquez" performed by Agustin Marurí, on the Saturday evening.This
will take place in the Clothworker's Hall at the University of Leeds.
There will be a fee of £40 for attendance.
