I have received the following request for assistance:
------------------------------------------------------
The UN's International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction is coming
to an end this year. For its annual 'Disaster Day' in October, we are
conducting a '1000 talks in 1000 schools' to raise awareness of
disasters and the means of preventing them. Part of the exercise is
to provide lively material for the speakers and to leave it with
teachers for later use. In order to grab the attention of children, I
would be grateful if you could send me any of the following:
- personal observations of what happened when you or a friend or
colleague were caught in (or in the aftermath of) an earthquake,
tsunami, volcano, flood or hurricane.
- anecdotes from past disastrous events.
- amazing facts about disasters
- sources of the above (books, websites, journals)
For example, Caruso is reported to have thrown open his window and
sang at the time of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, stimulated by
the emotion of the event. Does anyone know which song it was?
The information collected will become available to all through the UK
IDNDR website: www.oneworld.org\idndr
Please contribute if possible and/or pass this request on to your
local contacts to see if they can add more.
------------------------------------------------------
If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know and I will
pass them back along the chain.
Thanks
Russ
