Session on Prosody, Mid-America Ling Conference
We are soliciting papers for a symposium on Prosody and Intonation, to be
held as a special session of the 1999 Mid-America Linguistics Conference.
Papers on any aspect of prosody and/or intonation studies will be considered.
The 1999 Mid-America Linguistics Conference will be held Oct. 15-16 at
the University of Kansas, Lawrence. Geoffrey Pullum will be the guest
speaker.

Postdoctoral Research Traineeship conducting research in Speech and
Hearing Science (broadly defined), Department of Speech and Hearing
Science, The Ohio State University
A Postdoctoral Research Training Fellowship (National
Institutional Research Service Award Fellowship) for PhDs or MDs is
available immediately. This postdoctoral traineeship provides an
opportunity to pursue focused research (either basic research or
clinical research) in one of five areas of concentration within the
discipline of speech and hearing science including speech production,
speech processing, psychoacoustics, speech perception, and
speech-language development. Emphasis of this training program is on
cross-disciplinary research. The training faculty come from many
different departments including the Departments of Speech and Hearing
Science (Robert Fox, Lawrence Feth, Jan Weisenberger, Osamu Fujimura,
Marios Fourakis, Jan Edwards, Sandy Schneider, Michael Trudeau),
Linguistics (Mary Beckman, Keith Johnson,), Psychology (Mari Jones,
Neal Johnson, Caroline Palmer, Mark Pitt, Julie Boland),
Otolaryngology (Kamran Barin, Tom DeMaria), Electrical Engineering
(Ashok Krishnamurthy, Stan Ahalt, Randy Moses), Zoology (William
Masters), Mechanical Engineering (Mardi Hastings), and
Wright-Patterson AFB (Tim Anderson).
Potential trainees should have a doctorate and be a U.S. citizen or have
permanent residence status.
This traineeship is for two years. Support will include a stipend, moving
expenses, travel, and other training-related expenses.

* SPHEAR (Speech, Hearing and Recognition) is a research
network funded by the European Commission Transfer and
Mobility of Researchers programme from 1st March 1998 for four
years.
* SPHEAR is researching models of hearing, particularly
Computational Auditory Scene Analysis and the Precedence
Effect. The network links this work to new methodologies for
robust automatic speech recognition, primarily
'Missing Data' and 'Multistream'. Recognition for in-car applications

JIPA SOLICITS SUBMISSIONS!
The Journal of the International Phonetic Association is looking for
articles of interest to the phonetics community.
As you may have heard, there is a yet-unratified plan to have three
editors for the coming year, Peter Ladefoged, John Local, and Linda
Shockey. In the past, editing and producing JIPA has proved too
much for any one person, despite enormous (and much
appreciated) efforts from editors, most recently Martin Barry. As a
result of having more editors some new reviewers we will be able to
handle more contributions and improve turnaround time.
Contributors might like to note that the Journal of the International
Phonetic Association has a far higher circulation among individual
phoneticians than any other journal in the field.
Other changes are being discussed ... watch this space.
We strongly urge you to submit the research paper which you are
currently writing up to JIPA. Please send to one of the following
