This postdoctoral traineeship provides an opportunity to pursue focused research (either basic research or clinical research) in one of five areas of concentration within the discipline of speech and hearing science including speech production, speech processing, psychoacoustics, speech perception, and speech-language development. Emphasis of this training program is on cross-disciplinary research. The training faculty come from many different departments including the Departments of Speech and Hearing Science (Robert Fox, Lawrence Feth, Jan Weisenberger, Osamu Fujimura, Marios Fourakis, Jan Edwards, Sandy Schneider, Michael Trudeau), Linguistics (Mary Beckman, Keith Johnson,), Psychology (Mari Jones, Neal Johnson, Caroline Palmer, Mark Pitt, Julie Boland), Otolaryngology (Kamran Barin, Tom DeMaria), Electrical Engineering (Ashok Krishnamurthy, Stan Ahalt, Randy Moses), Zoology (William Masters), Mechanical Engineering (Mardi Hastings), and Wright-Patterson AFB (Tim Anderson). Potential trainees should have a doctorate and be a U.S. citizen or have permanent residence status. This traineeship is for two years. Support will include a stipend, moving expenses, travel, and other training-related expenses. Interested individuals should submit inquiries and vitae along with a list of references to: Dr. Robert A. Fox, Dept of Speech and Hearing Science, 110 Pressey Hall, 1070 Carmack Rd. The network links this work to new methodologies for robust automatic speech recognition, primarily 'Missing Data' and 'Multistream'. Recognition for in-car applications is used as a testbed. For more details, see <http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/~pdg/sphear/sphear.htm * The SPHEAR partners are University of Sheffield, GB Ruhr Universitat Bochum, DE Daimler-Chrysler Research, Ulm, DE Institute Communication Parle, Grenoble, FR IDIAP, Martigny, CH University of Keele, GB Wire Communication Lab, University of Patras, GR. * SPHEAR employs BOTH POSTDOCTORAL AND DOCTORAL RESEARCHERS (you can do part or all of your Ph.D. within the network). * By the TMR eligibility rules, all these researchers must be under 35 years of age, be European Union citizens and be prepared to work outside their own country. * There will be opportunities for individuals to take a series of placements to work in several SPHEAR labs who are collaborating on the same or related tasks. * Research students who have already commenced their doctoral studies may spend part of their time on placements within SPHEAR. * Research students will have their tuition fees paid by the network. * Payment will be based on the Marie Curie TMR fellowship rates (details from the web site) If you are interested, send your CV and the names and addresses of two referees to the address below. Indicate what SPHEAR tasks (see the web site) and what SPHEAR labs interest you, and when you expect to be available. Alternatively, talk to us at Eurospeech, where several SPHEAR papers will be presented. ---------------------------------------- Dr Phil Green Speech and Hearing Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Sheffield Regent Court 211 Portobello St., Sheffield S1 4DP UK phone: (44) 114 22 21828 fax: (44) 114 27 80972 email: [log in to unmask] www: <<http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/people/P.Green/ ********************* BOOKS & JOURNALS ********************* JIPA SOLICITS SUBMISSIONS! The Journal of the International Phonetic Association is looking for articles of interest to the phonetics community. As you may have heard, there is a yet-unratified plan to have three editors for the coming year, Peter Ladefoged, John Local, and Linda Shockey. In the past, editing and producing JIPA has proved too much for any one person, despite enormous (and much appreciated) efforts from editors, most recently Martin Barry. As a result of having more editors some new reviewers we will be able to handle more contributions and improve turnaround time. Contributors might like to note that the Journal of the International Phonetic Association has a far higher circulation among individual phoneticians than any other journal in the field. Other changes are being discussed ... watch this space. We strongly urge you to submit the research paper which you are currently writing up to JIPA. Please send to one of the following (postal addresses on request): Martin Barry [log in to unmask] Peter Ladefoged [log in to unmask] John Local [log in to unmask] Linda Shockey [log in to unmask] **************** RESOURCES **************** Vocal Emotions Mailing List We would like to announce a new mailing list for discussing research questions about the vocal expression of emotions: [log in to unmask] In order to subscribe/unsubscribe, write an email to: [log in to unmask] Topics to be discussed in this mailing list encompass all aspects of vocal emotions research, e.g., theoretical considerations, empirical research, methodological issues, technological applications, ...
