Prospect Magazine and the ESRC have launched a New Century essay prize
with a first prize of stg5,000.
'As part of our combined commitment to narrowing the gulf between
academia, public policy and debate we are inviting academics and
post-graduates in the social sciences, and related studies in the
political and social field, to write about their work in a way that is
engaging, informative, inspiring and well written. ... We have selected
some of the themes that we think are the most important issues academics
and policy makers need to address today. Development of these themes
with an eye to their intersection with the public, with academic
expertise, government and the media will be rewarded. ... The themes
range from globalisation to human rights, from the environment to
democracy, from national identities to economic justice, from authority
to war, from the Internet to knowledge and from equality and social
division
to education. Entries that address other themes are acceptable as long
as they adhere to the high standards of content and subject that
Prospect and the ESRC expect.'
