A response to Dr. David Uzzell:
Dear David Uzzell,
Thank you for your message. I am sorry to hear of your experience with a
previous NFER review being published later than expected. As I have only
been working at the Foundation for some five months, I was not involved in
that work and am unsure which project it was. To my knowledge, there has
never been an EE literature review undertaken at the NFER. Possibly you may
have been referring to the Directory of EE Research Centres published in
1994?
In terms of what I am undertaking, this is an internally funded literature
review project on a particular area within the EE research literature -
namely, studies on learners and learning within the context of primary and
secondary school-based EE.
My request for information via the e mail network was to inform colleagues
that I was undertaking this work, and to provide an opportunity for
individuals to alert my attention to work that they felt would be of
relevance. I saw it as a means of accessing references that would complement
other sources such as bibliographic data-bases, journal content's pages,
conference reports etc.
Any information that I receive from colleagues will be followed up and
included within my ongoing review. The intention is that the fruits of this
project will be published next year in two forms - as an NFER monograph, and
as a journal article, possibly to Environmental Education Research.
As to my suggestion that contributions should be sent to me individually,
this was in response to a suggestion from another list member (Chris Oulton)
who commented thus:
"I don't know how you stop it happening but you should know that the
replies to your message are being copied to everyone on the mail list as was
your thank you note to the last respondent. This could get out of hand!!"
Like Chris, I too felt that list members would not greatly appreciate their
e mails being clogged up with responses to my request. Perhaps, though, as
you point out it would be a valuable source of information for others. I'm
sure people can decide for themselves whether to reply individually or to
the whole list.
I hope that this responds to your concerns.
