Hello,
here are the results of the survey:
Do you use for number crunching:
1) Classical Unix workstation (Sun, HP,...)
2) Supercomputer (parallel or vector: Cray, Fujitsu, SGI Origin)
3) Intel PC under Windows (NT or 95/98)
4) Intel PC under Linux
I got 35 answers.
I included in 1) VMS based workstations
The sum of the categories is greater than 35 because most people use
several kind of machines.
1) 26 --> 74%
2) 16 --> 44%
3) 9 --> 25%
4) 10 --> 28%
and also:
5) MacIntosh : 2 --> 6%
Comments:
- Classical workstations are still the most widely used machines
in the scientific community.
- But there is a trend -at least more and more people are wondering-
to replace them by PC-Intel machines. The main reason being a better
performance/cost ratio.
In that case the choice Win/Linux is not easy: on the one hand people
clearly prefer Linux as an OS, but on the other hand there are more
professionnal compilers under Windows. Also, the solution Windows is
often imposed by the management while users would prefer Linux.
* One can hope that this situation change, since Linux is more
* and more used. Vendors should therefore be more and more
* interested in this market.
- People using supercomputers have no plan to replace them by
PC-Intel machines !!
* The evidence: by definition, supercomputers offer features which
* are not available on classical computers...
Best regards,
