Applications are invited for two posts at the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader
level in Statistics, tenable from 1st January 2000 (or another date by mutual
agreement).
The successful applicants will be expected to contribute to the research and
teaching activities of the group, which obtained Grade 5 in both the 1992 and
1996 Research Assessment Exercises (RAEs). The Statistics Group currently

of statistical methods.
(ii) Financial mathematics.
(iii) Probability theory.
Candidates for the advertised posts should have a strong research record in
any area within statistics and probability, but an interest in one of the
above areas would be particularly welcome.
Research topics of particular interest to members of the group at the
present time include:
Bayesian statistics Derivative pricing and hedging
Incomplete and imperfect markets Interest rate modelling
Markov chain Monte Carlo methods Markov processes
Model uncertainty Multivariate analysis
Optimal investment Quality assessment in health/education
Sequential clinical trials Statistical image analysis
Stochastic differential equations Time-series forecasting
We have a lively group of research students in statistics and probability and
frequent short and long term international visitors. For further information
about the Statistics Group see: http://www.maths.bath.ac.uk
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is one of the largest of the sixteen
Departments making up the University of Bath. For administrative purposes,
the Department is organised into three Groups -- Mathematics, Statistics, and
Computing -- with about 50 permanent academic staff. Some research interests
cross group boundaries, and there are collaborative research projects and
joint seminars involving members of different groups. In the 1996 RAE, the
Department was awarded a Grade 5 (see note at # below), not only in
Statistics, but also in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computing.
The Department offers BSc and MMath degree courses in a range of subjects in
the Mathematical Sciences, including (a) Statistics and (b) Mathematics and
Statistics. These degrees are based on a common first year course (with minor
exceptions) and progressive specialisation thereafter. About half the
students take the BSc course over four years, spending the third year on
placement in industry or a research establishment. This industrial training
is a highly valued part of the course and is one of the distinctive features
that helps Bath maintain a high-quality intake of students (the Departmental
average A-level points in recent years has exceeded 27; see note at # below).
The Department has a computer support team of three full-time members of
staff, and an excellent network of high-speed CPU and file servers.
Any queries about the academic aspects of the post should be directed to
Prof David Draper (te. 01225 826222, email [log in to unmask]),
Prof Chris Jennison (tel. 01225 826468, email [log in to unmask]),
Prof Chris Rogers (tel. 01225 826224, email [log in to unmask]) or to the
current Head of Group, Dr Chris Chatfield (tel. 01225 826219, email

APPLICATIONS
Those who wish their names to be considered for the posts should send -- to
Peter J Hill, Director of Personnel, University of Bath, Claverton Down,
Bath, BA2 7AY -- an application which contains a statement of the candidate's
experience, qualifications, and published work, and the names and addresses
of three persons to whom reference may be made, to reach Peter Hill by Friday
13th August 1999. There is no requirement for applications to be made on a
standard form, but candidates should ensure that any information likely to be
relevant is provided. Candidates may also submit supporting papers to express
general or particular ideas they may have in connection with the development
of the posts in the University. It is anticipated that short-listing will
take place on or about Friday September 3rd, with interviews to occur on or
about Thursday September 16th.
UNIVERSITY OF BATH
The academic structure of the University comprises three Faculties and the
School of Management. The Faculties are Humanities and Social Sciences
(Departments of Economics and International Development, Education, European
Studies and Modern Languages, Psychology and Social and Policy Sciences),
Engineering and Design (Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering,
Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials
Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering) and Science (Departments
of Biology and Biochemistry, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, Pharmacy and
Pharmacology, Physics and Postgraduate Medicine). Several departments of
study have developed their own self-financing centres for research and short
courses. The University has an enviable reputation for the standard of its
intake, its graduate employment record, its research and its location on the
edge of a World Heritage city (as designated by the United Nations). Overall
the University ranked 6th in the UK in the 1996 RAE.
The University of Bath, which can trace its history from the Bristol Merchant
Venturers Technical College dating back to 1894, was founded by Royal Charter
in 1966. The University has some 8,200 students who read for degrees in
Science, Technology, Arts, and Social Sciences, and has established itself as
one of the most highly-rated universities in the UK. It attracts very highly
qualified students and emphasises the relevance of its courses to the needs
of potential employers. Two-thirds of its undergraduate students are on
courses in which one of the years is spent on external placement. The
University's record of excellence in teaching, research and sound internal
management has been rewarded in the continuing support it has received from
funding bodies, industry and commerce, and this record has earned it
recognition as one of the UK's leading institutions of higher education. In
addition to its national and international roles, the University has a
growing regional importance as the chosen partner for the development of
higher education in Swindon and Wiltshire.
The University employs about 2,000 staff and has an annual turnover of 75
million pounds. Considerable use is made of computerised systems covering
many administrative procedures, including financial reporting and budgetary
control, student records, and the planning and resourcing processes. The
University, along with other universities in the UK, is moving towards a
common management and administrative computing system for operational and
management information needs.
The University is based on a fine downland site of about 200 acres at
Claverton Down, less than two miles south-east of the city centre. The
University has been developed on a green-field site over the last twenty-five
years, so that all the buildings are relatively new and have been designed to
modern standards. Physical working conditions are pleasant, with many
buildings commanding attractive views. The facilities on campus include a
grocery shop, news agent, post office, book shop, sub-branches of four banks,
a medical centre, and a dental practice. Those with sporting and other social
interests will find a variety of clubs and societies open to them. There are
extensive catering facilities available.
In addition to those buildings used for teaching and for administration,
there are residential buildings on campus in which approximately 1,700
students reside. The city of Bath is recognised as being architecturally one
of the finest in Europe and is a very pleasant place in which to live. The
communications network is good. Trains run at least every hour to London 21
hours a day, with the fastest journey time about 75 minutes. The M4 motorway
runs 10 miles north of Bath and provides a convenient road network to London,
the Midlands, Wales and South West England.
Westwood Nursery, which is on site at Claverton Down, offers competitively
priced nursery care for children from two years of age until they start
school. The nursery is open throughout the year and, subject to the
availability of places, children may attend on a full or part time basis.
Appointments are offered subject to the University receiving a satisfactory
health report from the University Medical Officer. This is normally
undertaken on the basis of a review of a confidential medical questionnaire.
Smoking of any kind is prohibited in all University buildings, with the
exception of some bar and residential areas.
# For non-UK readers of this message, 5 is the the highest numerical score
possible in the RAE rating scale, and A-level scores are intended to measure
high-school achievement, on a scale from 0 to 30.

Interesting quotes, number 11 in a series:
What do we mean when we say that one past event is important and another
insignificant? No past event has any intrinsic importance. The knowledge of
it is valuable only as it leads us to form just calculations with respect
to the future.
-- Thomas Macaulay [spoken like a good de-Finetti-style
predictivist]
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the
affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure
the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in
others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a
garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has
breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson [a bit sanctimonious, but in
the right neighborhood]
