> HEAD OF SCOTTISH CANCER INTELLIGENCE UNIT

> Salary Range:  £31,027 - £ 41,447

> The Information and Statistics Division (ISD) of the Common Services
> Agency collects, validates, interprets and disseminates information on
> the National Health Service in Scotland, providing support and advice
> to the Scottish Office Department of Health, Health Boards, NHS Trusts
> and a variety of professional bodies and researchers.
> 
> The Scottish Cancer Intelligence Unit (SCIU) comprises the Scottish
> Cancer Registry, which collects information on all new cases of cancer
> in the Scottish population, the Scottish Cancer Therapy Network, which
> administers clinical trials and supports prospective audit of cancer
> treatment, the Cancer Surveillance Group, which is responsible for
> providing routine information and ad hoc analyses of data from the
> registry and screening programmes, and the Epidemiological Studies
> Group, which undertakes commissioned field research on cancer risk
> factors.  The Unit also draws on data collected in other parts of ISD,
> such as hospital discharge records relating to cancer patients.  A
> particular aim of the Unit is to maximise the use of the basic data
> through health services and epidemiological research.

> The Head of SCIU will combine strong management skills with a proven
> background in research or information provision in order to develop
> the capabilities of the Unit to serve the NHS in Scotland, the
> Scottish Office and a wide range of other agencies and individuals

> Applicants should have a degree in statistics or a related discipline
> and at least 7 years relevant postgraduate experience.  Knowledge and
> understanding of current issues relating to the NHS in Scotland will

> administrative and clerical as well as senior manager levels.
