Nick
Thanks for your observations.
I suspect that my original email was not clear enough. This is a
young girl far too young to smoke, She is under the care of a
paediatric haematologist and her main complaint is of being teased
at junior school for her plethoric appearance. She has been very
thoroughly investigated from the haematological point of view
including a bone marrow. A few results are still outstanding
including chromosomes and EPO. However, all tests including
other biochemistry so far are normal and she has no chest
disease. According to her echo her heart functions normally
despite the high Hb and PCV. I expected that her blood gases
would be normal also and in an ideal world I would have repeated
them but this is difficult.
Her needle phobia comes from her mother who has had bad
experiences with the medical profession and is in a wheelchair with
severe rheumatoid arthritis.
