Geoff Lester of Bristol wrote to ask if anyone had seen spuriously raised
creatinine due to radiology contrast media.
In response, I offer an answer, a question and a comment:
Answer: no, we have not seen spuriously raised creatinine due to contrast
media
Question: what were the circumstances that lead to focussing on the
contrast media as the potential interfering agent? Given the history, the
patient is quite likely to be receiving a variety of drugs, any one of
which might be implicated.
Comment: in fact, the Vitros creatinine method is rather robust in the
sense that drug interference seems to be infrequent. However, flucytosine
has been well documented as the cause of the situation you have seen -
raised creatinine by Vitros method, normal by Jaffe. See for example CMAJ
1987; 137:233-4.
