We have now published the book "Towards optimal use of clinical
chemistry in primary care -Swedish experiences" Spri rapport 476,
Spri Stockholm,1999.
The purpose was to implement new knowledge of optimal use of clinical
chemistry in primary care and to study how it can be used in clinical
practice.
The report includes three different intervention studies with
significant effect of continuing education on laboratory
utilisation. Most earlier studies have only concerned about decreases in
tes rates and reduction of laboratory costs. However, if the total cost
for care are taken into account some new analyses are underused
and should be increased in number.
Recent scientific literature (with 154 references) has been collected
and discussed between Swedish clinical chemists and physicians in
primary care resulting in practical guidelines for optimal laboratory
use.
