Thanks to William Marshall for suggesting this Case.
A 53 year old lady, seeing her Family Doctor. Clinical information is
'anaemic'. Serum results are
Sodium: 141 mmol/L
Potassium: 3.9 mmol/L
Urea: 6.8 mmol/L (2.8 - 7.0)
Creatinine: 250 umol/L (62 - 133)
Calcium: 2.20 mmol/L
Phosphate: 0.69 mmol/L (0.81 - 1.45)
Alkaline phosphatase: 148 U/L (<150)
Albumin: 39 g/L
Globulins: 30 g/L
Bilirubin: 7 umol/L
AST: 27 U/L (<50)
You suspect an error, and check the urea and creatinine results, which
prove to be analytically correct. A previous Haematology request showed a
haemoglobin of 9.7 g/dL with a normochromic normocytic picture, clinical
information being given as 'non-specific malaise'.

Sorry that the summary for Case 68 is slightly late (last week was very
busy) but a minor celebration is in order because Cases for Comment are two
years old this week.
Best wishes
