Dear colleagues!
With ten days left to the millennium shift, I guess many of us have already
put the contingency plans and Y2K compatibility certificates and whatever
somewhat aside for the time being. Most things have been tested by
ourselves and our suppliers, and it is hard to see what more could be done.
In the information technology field, dec. 31th. will be a particularly
busy one, as many in Europe and the US will be awaiting reports from
countries such as Japan, Australia and New Zealand about unexpected bugs
and other surprises related to the date shift. This is probably related to
the fact that many IT-systems are so complicated and intermingled with
others, that it is impossible to cover everything in tests and simulations.
In analogy with this, I guess it would be appreciated if those of you that
will be storm troopers in this matter would put out a report if anything
really strange and unexpected should appear with instruments and other lab
related equipment. Such a message might reach us in Europe and America
within our working hours, and could be of help in anticipating trouble for
those of our staff that will be on call for the night. And I guess
discussing such cases in this forum may be of help for both early and late
arrivers in the next millennium.
