I wondered if you could post the following trail for the NHSnet survey =
to the ACB list?
Thanks,

NHSNet and Internet Mail - Closing the Gaps?
--------------------------------------------------------------
It has become apparent that NHSnet as currently set-up has problems with =
mail addressed using the Internet style (SMTP) unless it is sent to a =
user external to the NHSNet.
An initial, local, survey at a major NHS trust shows that has caused a =
lot of additional work and frustration for users. We have therefore =
decided to conduct a wider survey.
The form is now online at www.wwm-uk.net/nhsnetsurvey
More info:
While the behaviour of NHS net could be said to be technically correct =
from a purely X.400 perspective, in fact users are unable to send =
messages to some colleagues for whom they have otherwise valid addresses =
(without resorting to the use of the Internet more directly).=20
More confusingly for a user it is often difficult for them to tell the =
difference (between a message that
will 'work' and one that wont).
Although an 'SMTP relay' service is planned for the near future (and C&W =
offer their own) this will not address the problem.
Having recently initiated a survey at one 'premier league' NHS Trust =
Hospital we were astonished to find that the extent of this problem in =
actual practice is very widespread indeed. Bearing in mind that other =
NHS users are as likely to be affected as local users I have now agreed =
to conduct a survey on a NHS-wide basis to establish the full extent of =
the problem with
a view to seeking a solution for the NHS community as a whole.
We are inviting all uses of NHS net (and users of messaging in =
particular) to contribute to the survey which they can do by visiting =
www.wwm-uk.net/nhsnetsurvey
We hope to publish preliminary results in time for Healthcare Computing =
1999 (HC99).
In particular the areas we are seeking to survey include:
- Non delivery of messages using Internet style addressing (to users =
inside and outside NHSNet / the X.400 messaging service).
- Speed of delivery
- Reliability
We would be grateful if as many users as possible would complete the =
form to assist with our investigation of the problem and to help to =
build up a comprehensive picture.
