We should have no problem about clinical scientists being appointed in
Cyopathology. However, there are issues training and competencies - in the skills
and knowledge needed to practise in the required role.
Appointment to other clinical scientist posts, particularly at grade C and above
B17 require the involvement of assessors. As far as I know there is no list of
assessors for scientist posts in Cytology. Who, therefore, has graded these posts
and who has assessesd those appointed?
If we (the NHS) do not get this right it could create more problems than it solves.
If there is a need for clinical scientists in Cytology (and there does seem to be an
argument for this), somebody needs to develop a plan for selecting suitable
candidates and ensuring that they are properly trained.
