Subject: Computerisation of Library Card Catalogue
Dear All
As has been reported to Council by the Library Working Party it is the
intention to computerise the card catalogue for the historical book
collection in order to make checking and selecting from the collection
easier.
The card catalogue has now been delivered to and re-assembled in Errol
Street. Nicola Crichton carried out a test input of the cards onto an
Excel spreadsheet last Friday - it is possible to input at a rate of
approximately 45-50 cards per hour. With an estimated 8000 cards this
process could therefore take around 170 hours if it were left to one
person!
Therefore i am looking for volunteers to assist with the inputting
process - if every member of council was able to input 228 cards
(approx) we would be able to meet our deadline of the first week of
September.
Volunteers can either come into Errol St and input direct from the card
catalogue or i will send them a reasonable number of cards with the
Excel sheet on disk and instructions so that you can input data in the
comfort of your own home!
If you could let me know as soon as possible if you will be able to
assist over the next few weeks. Also could you forward this message to
any members of the Society who you think may be able to assist.
Many thanks in anticipation
Regards
Paul
