With apologies for cross-posting - I'm replying to a thread which came in
through the Research mailing list, but the issue is relevant to the other
lists too.
I had intended to reply to Jo Alexander's suggestion (> If in doubt, use
the File - Save As option that most word processors possess and send as
plain text - .txt.), but Marianne beat me to it. My reply would have been
similar, as I have already posted a message about the problem with
attachments.
Even text files sent as attachments can carry viruses, depending on the
programme used to create them (as Marianne has already found out).
I'll just repeat my previous advice to all mailers -
1. Please don't send attachments to the mailing list.
2. Never open a mailing list message which contains an attachment.
3. Attachments should only be used to exchange data between individuals by
prior agreement.
4. The best way to send useful information to the list (and to individual
email recipients) is the slow, but safe way - copy the info. into your email
message (using "copy" and "paste").
I've added similar advice into the welcoming message for new members joining
the list.
Best wishes to you all
Ishbel
