MSc (Econ) / Diploma Information and Library Studies (Distance learning) at
DILS, University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
September 1999 saw the launch of a distance learning version of the highly
successful full-time Masters conversion course — MSc (Econ) in Information
and Library Studies (First Qualification). 46 distance learning students
registered on the first intake of the course and attended a study school in
Aberystwyth which lasted six days. All of the students enrolled on this
pioneer intake are resident in Britain and Ireland.
The MSc programme is designed to offer students a challenging academic
experience which will prepare them for a professional career in a wide range
of information or library environments and will build upon their previous
work experience. Students working towards a MSc able to progress at their
own pace, taking between three and five years to complete the course. The
degree course consists of eight modules, which are delivered through
self-study materials (consisting of written packs and in some cases
supporting audio-cassettes, videos, computer disks and CD-ROMs) and a
dissertation.
The programme is open to graduates with a minimum of six months relevant
work experience. In addition to this, applicants must have access to a
computer with Internet link-up and are expected to acquire basic word
processing skills before the start of the course.
