Ron Hoffman makes a very clear argument. Nonetheless it seems to me too
literal. Years ago my sister-in-law recorded a conversation about perception
with the seven-year-olds in the primary school class which she taught. They
got to talking about the differences between what was real and what was
imaginary, and one boy came out with the remark 'I mean this table's real,
but you can also imagine it if you try hard enough.' I do believe something
like this obtains in front of the film screen. You can just watch what's on
the screen, but if you try hard enough, then with certain films at least,
you can also imagine them.
