University of Kent Film Studies Presents
*From Hollywood to Hong Kong*
International Film Culture and Historical Poetics
A One Day Symposium on the work of David Bordwell and
Kristin Thompson
Monday 28 June, Grimond Lecture Theatre 3, University of
Kent
For over twenty years, David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson
have presented groundbreaking and often controversial work
on film theory, film history and film criticism. This one-day
symposium offers the opportunity for debate around such
matters as: cognitive film theory and 'post-theoretical'
research; parametric narration and the role and history of
film style; 'classical' and contemporary Hollywood, and the
relationship between Hollywood and other national film
cultures.
Both David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson will be present.
Professor Bordwell will talk on Hong Kong cinema, while
Professor Thompson will discuss contemporary Hollywood
cinema. The symposium will culminate in a round-table
discussion of the issues raised during the day. Participants
will include Ian Christie, Elizabeth Cowie, Michael Grant,
Katie Grant, Andrew Klevan and Murray Smith.
The symposium is open to all interested parties. There is no
charge, but we would be grateful if anyone planning to attend
could inform us, so that we can ensure that there is sufficient
space. Please contact Murray Smith at [log in to unmask]
Organized by UKC Film Studies in association with the Kent
