Title: New ideas in random-effect models
Abstract:
Hierarchical generalized linear models (HGLMs) generalize both GLMs and
GLMMs to allow non-normal random effects. A new criterion,
h-likelihood, is proposed for fitting the fixed and random effects
given the dispersion components. A generalization of REML, producing an
adjusted profile h-likelihood (APHL), enables the
dispersion components to be estimated as well. The method sheds new
light on the nature of random effects in random-effect models.
Extensions to correlated errors with
non-normal longitudinal data and dynamic models will be outlined.
Connections are made with marginal likelihood, and the scope of further
work will be sketched.
