Dear Frans,
You may want to have a look at the following (which I haven't seen):
Baschet, Jerome,
Image et evenement: l'art sans la peste (c. 1348-1400)?,
in: La peste nera: Dati di una realta ed elementi di una
interpretazione, Spoleto 1994, S. 25-48
Also, I would second the opinion expressed by Scott Montgomery, that
the development of the suffering Jesus in art precedes the Black
Death by some generations. There is a danger that an all too narrow
focus on the effects of the Plague might turn out less than
satisfying for your student.
Best wishes,
Christoph
