'The West Heslerton Assessment Document' has just gone online in Issue 5
of Internet Archaeology. The West Heslerton project was a pioneer in
archaeological methodology, both in the recording and manipulation of data
and in the development of research methods.
Now with the authorisation and support of English Heritage
<http://www.eng-h.gov.uk/>, Internet Archaelology has published this
document to explain the approach taken in the analysis and publication of
the project but also to stimulate wider discussion about the approach and
the interpretations proposed for the archaeological remains.
This assessment was produced as part of the formal process of project
management required by the project's main sponsor, English Heritage and
conforming to the standards laid down in The Management of Archaeological
Projects <http://www.eng-h.gov.uk/guidance/map2/>. It was created after
the completion of seven seasons of excavation at West Heslerton in order
to set out the 'site narrative', a chronological account of the sequence
of human activity on the site as revealed through excavation, and to
establish the potential of the various datasets collected during the
excavation to illuminate the original project objectives.
