To be quite fair to the fellows in Belgium, it wasn't them who
published the PL on CD-ROM. Brepols publishes the CETEDOC database,
Chadwyck Healey is responsible for the PL database (pld) and for the
forthcoming Acta Sanctorum. The CETEDOC is largely based on the
computer files used for printing modern critical editions like Corpus
Christianorum. These texts don't have to be scanned or re-typed.
Our project, by the way, has just bought a CD-ROM entitled "Quellen-
sammlung zur mittelalterlichen Geschichte" for no more than DM 78,--
containing about a dozen Latin chronicles (taken from the 19thC MGH
editions) plus their German translations (from the "Geschichts-
schreiber der deutschen Vorzeit" series, also 19th C). Apparently
they used scanning, and they say they're specialized in scanning
texts from editions in old "Gothic" (Fraktur) type. They claim that
their error rate is at 1/4000, which would be pretty good.
Their homepage is at http://www.bmp-verlag.de/
The price makes this very interesting, but I haven't yet had a chance
to check for "scannos". Also, they have to rely on editions that are
no longer copyrighted. In the case of Otto of Freising's *Gesta
Friderici*, for example, the best edition is that by Schmale in the
"Freiherr vom Stein Gedaechtnisausgabe" bilingual edition.
bmp-Verlag had to use the MGH SS rer. Germ. edition, with different
chapter numbers (still different counting in the old German
translation, apparently based on the still earlier MGH SS in-folio
edition. Thus, ch. 36 in the first edition and in the old German
translation is ch. 37 in the MGH SS rer. Germ., and ch. 38 in the
new edition by Schmale).
Cheers,
Christoph
