Dear Brian,
You might take a look at the poetry of Matthew of Rievaulx, an early 13th
century English Cistercian. The poems survive in one MS - Paris BN MS 15157
- and have been partially transcribed by A. Wilmart, 'Les Mélanges de
Mathieu, Préchantre de Rievaulx au debut du XIIIe siècle', Revue
Bénédictine 52 (1940), 15-84; additional transcription may be found in J.
Leclerq, 'Lettres de Vocation à La Vie Monastique', Studia Anselmiana,
fasc. 37, Analecta Monastica 3rd series, Rome, 1955 and in J. Girsch,
'Matthew of Rievaulx on Select Vices: Poetry and Incidental Prose from
Paris BN MS Lat. 15157', unpublished essay, Toronto, 1983; for other
mentions of Matthew, see R.W. Southern, The Making of the Middle Ages,
London, rev. ed., 1957, p. 107; B.P. McGuire, Friendship and Community; The
Monastic Experience 350-1250, Kalamazoo, 1988, esp. pp. 369-73 ; A.G. Rigg,
A History of Anglo-Norman Literature 1066-1422, Cambridge, 1992, esp. pp.
136-8; G. Raciti, 'Une allocution familière de S. Aelred conservée dans les
mélanges de Mathieu de Rievaulx', Collectanea Cisterciensia 47 (1985),
267-80.
Marian poetry crops up in other Cistercian English MS - see for instance a
Mariale from Byland abbey, now Manchester John Rylands Library MS 153 (only
short pieces, from memory, but interesting nonetheless); also the
Meditations on the Virgin by Stephen of Sawley (editions and translations
in the Cistercian Fathers series - prose but poetic) and many more.
This is a subject dear to my own heart, and I would be happy to correspond
with you on or off list.
