Regarding Courtney Hanson's query about Jews and the Ecce Home,
William Chester Jordan's article, "The Last Tormentor of Christ: An Image
of the Jew in Ancient and Medieval Exegesis, Art, and Drama" in _Jewish
Quarterly Review_ (LXXVIII, 1987; 21-47) explores the development of the
sponge-bearer as "the worst evil actor of the in the crucifixion" and his
identification with the Jews. I believe he carries the argument into the
Renaissance in a later issue, but I don't have that reference at hand.
