O frabjous day! For this morning I received the proofs of my article,
"Abelard's Allusive Style." It will appear in vol. 34 no. 1 of
"Mittellateinisches Jarbuch" in April 1999. It is in fact three articles
which I rewrote as one at the suggestion of Prof. Stohlmann, editor of MJ.
The first part is entitled "Abelard and Bede" and notes, in general, Bede's
influence on Abelard, and in particular some verbal influences of one of
Bede's homilies on one of Abelard's hymns; the second part is called "A
Painted Sky" and is a study of Abelard's hymn no. 6, "Ornarunt terram
germina"; the third part is called "Risus" and examines the use of this
word in the doxology to his Good Friday hymns.
Prof. Stohlmann informs me that you will be able to make this magnificent
tome your own for a mere 88 DM, or roughly what Mon Cher Librarian would
call 30 GBP. Eat your heart out, Chadwyck-Healy!
The Supple Doctor.
