Dear friends,
I have just heard about this conference and having
contacted the organiser been asked to advertise it on
lis-maps. Though the deadline has passed there are
still about twenty places left. I've booked myself on.
Best wishes

ORDNANCE SURVEY DIGITAL MAP DATA CONFERENCE FOR HIGHER
EDUCATION - 17 NOVEMBER 1998.
Ordnance Survey has been negotiating with the Joint
Information Systems Committee (JISC) on the development of
a service level type agreement covering the supply of a
range of national digital map datasets to Higher Education
Institutions. These datasets will be for teaching,
educational research and academic research applications.
Also since last January, Ordnance Survey Research Unit has
been developing and improving its University Liaison
Service. We have been gaining some very positive feedback
and would like to continue this upward trend.
In the light of these developments and the request from
many academics for a forum to exchange information and
discuss latest research issues, Ordnance Survey and JISC
would like to invite you to the first Ordnance Survey
Digital Map Data Conference for Higher Education to be
held on Tuesday 17th November at the Royal Society of
Medicine in London, that day will begin with registration
at 9.15 and will close between 4.30 and 5.00pm.
The conference will address three main issues:-
· The Ordnance Survey/JISC agreement . A presentation will
be given detailing the content of the agreement.
· The Ordnance Survey /University Liaison system. How it is
run presently in the Ordnance Survey Research Unit and how
this will change in the future when the JISC Agreement is
in place. · Research examples where Ordnance Survey has
collaborated with academic institutions or has been able to
provide them with data to enable them to carry out research
independently.
During the day there will be many opportunities to ask
questions and exchange views on these issues. In this way
it is hoped that the conference will provide another useful
line of communication between Ordnance Survey and the
Higher Education community.
The Conference venue has the capacity to hold a maximum of
150 people and we must therefore limit the places available
to two delegates per Higher Education Institution on a
first come first served basis. Please then fill out the
reply slip enclosed and return it to me by 30th October
1998. If you are allocated a place , you will receive a
conference pack in the week following.
If you have any questions on the conference proposals,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
Sallie Payne
