"Christian crowds" were not only made up of pilgrims. When Philip Augustus
of France and Isabelle of Hainaut were crowned in 1180, people pressed so
close around them that an awkward usher trying to beat back the crowd with
his rod tipped over 3 oil lamps onto the heads of Philip and Isabelle as
they knelt before the altar. This unruly mob came from estates and towns
around St.-Denis. - Aline Hornaday
